[DO LIFE WELL] limited spaces remaining
Often times we can get lost in how to do life well as a Christian, and can find ourselves on the paths of self-righteousness or self-justification. So to learn more about what Scripture tells us about the “hows” and “what to dos,” this summer our group will dive into the book of James with a study by Francis Chan.

Our goals:
– Learn more about what a life that is honoring and pleasing to God looks like according to Scripture, and how to apply that to our lives.
– Explore the tension we experience between faith and works.
– Seek out practical applications of Scripture while keeping our eyes fixed on the Gospel.
– Build community through authenticity, prayer, and grace-filled discussion.

Expectations:
– Meet consistently
– Participate
– Respect confidentiality
– Demonstrate grace and love to all members

Bible Reading: Our group will be studying the book of James. Please be reading James daily, inviting God to teach you, to convict you, and reveal his wisdom and direction on how to take steps of obedience.

Prayer: Prayer is a priority. We will share praises and requests to pray for at each meeting, and continue praying for one another throughout the week.

Questions: Your leader will make the questions we’ll be discussing available midweek. Before each meeting, please read and meditate upon the Scriptures we’re covering and the questions. Be prepared to share the thoughts, questions, answers, and or applications you uncovered during your time in the Word.

“The central Christian belief is that Christ’s death has somehow put us right with God and given us a fresh start… A good many different theories have been held as to how it works; what all Christians are agreed on is that it does work.” – C. S. Lewis

[LIFE COUNTS]
“Life counts, all of it. Everyone moment is potentially an opportunity to be guided by God into his way of living. Every moment is a chance to learn from Jesus how to live in the kingdom of God.”

Do you feel it’s time to get your hands dirty and seek a life of endurance and persevere in your faith? Well if so, looking forward to the delightful morning conversations on how we are being stretched and challenged in our “marathon” training as we read through James. Questions and struggles are more than welcomed. Thankfully, God did all the hard work on the cross and has provided THIS awesome summer small group community to go on our journey with.

-FYI-
Potential members will have to participate in phone interviews.
Members are expected to come every week and be ready to participate.
Members are expected to pray for one another.
Members are expected to struggle in the process of refinement. (Hurrah!)

[LIVE OUT LIVES IN FAITH] small group cancelled
Ever wonder what the relationship between faith and works is? What does it look like to live out our lives in faith?

We’ll be talking about these topics and more in our church-wide study of James (led virtually by Francis Chan) in our Small Group for the summer term.

Join us and we can talk about questions like:
1. Why does there appear to be a difference between Paul (“For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law” Romans 3:28) and James (“You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone” James 2:24)? How do we resolve these differences?
2. What should be the role of obeying the commandments of God be in our lives?
3. Is it true that if we know God’s love, we will “naturally” obey? How do we obey when don’t feel like obeying?
4. How do we deal with our pride and ego issues when seeing others who might be struggling or appear to us as if they don’t get it?

[REAL LIFE CHANGE] closed
“So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead… You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” [James 2:17-19]

Faith Vs. Works
The age old question, so which is it? Is James denying justification by faith alone?? Signup and let’s explore this together! According to Chuck Swindol, James is filled with direct commands to pursue a life of holiness. For James, a faith that does not produce real life change is a faith that is worthless (James 2:17). How well do our actions mirror the faith that we proclaim?

In this small group we will study the book of James and let it encourage us to pursue holiness. So grab your coffee and let’s study, encourage & fellowship @9AM!! See you there!

If you sign up, here are some things to expect:
1. Commit to attend meetings regularly & on time
2. Do the reading and questions beforehand
3. Memorize Scripture
4. Pray for one another
5. Participate

[EQUIPPED TO LIVE] closed
The book of James gives us practical guidelines that show us how genuine faith looks like. But, how do we practice our faith without growing in the sense of work-righteousness?

We live a life filled with challenges. Whether at home, job, relationships and health, we are all facing ups and downs in this earthly life. No matter what kind of job you have, workplace struggles are inevitable. We cannot stand in the face of those challenges in our own ability and strength. Only through faith in Jesus we can find strength to trust God and keep our eyes focused on Jesus while counting our difficulties as joy.

This small group will focus on understanding Godly wisdom so that we can be equipped to live our daily struggles in an uncommon way. While studying the practical wisdom given by the book of James, this small group will encourage us to seek together the transformation of the Holy Spirit, by renewing our mind with the Word of God. I believe that the renewal of our minds aligned with the deeper understanding of the Gospel will empower us to daily live out the genuine faith that the book of James is calling us to live!

If you join this small group, you are expected to:
1. Commit to attend meetings on time
2. Read & actively share in the discussion
3. Pray for one another
4. Lead the small group discussion once

[FAITH THAT WORKS] closed
Faith that is tested. Faith that grows. Faith that works. Faith that produces fruit. Faith that displays God.

Faith that is tested. Faith that grows. As believers, we run the race that is set before us knowing full well that our hope is sure! However, we also know full well that as we run this race, we stumble, we fall, we get discouraged and maybe at some point we just stopped running. Despite all the difficulties that we face and will be facing, we know that all these will result to us growing in faith.

Faith that works. Faith that produces fruit. The letter of James encourages us to be patient as the farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil. “…let patience have its perfect work, that you maybe perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” James 1:4.

Faith that displays God. In James 5:11, the end that God intended in the life of Job was seen — “that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.”

Let us run the race with perseverance together, as we look to the author and the finisher of our faith!

[WORK OUR FAITH OUT] closed
While we are all in different stages of our faith, the Bible often encourages us to continue growing in our faith and understanding of Him.

Hebrews 6:1 tell us, “Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,”

The Gospel is not elementary, rather it is deeper than anything we can ever know. We are only scratching the surface, but if you wish to dive deeper and discuss the more difficult issues around the gospel, let us come together and work our faith out together in love and for enabling us to love God more through the renewing of our minds.

In this small group, we will dig a little deeper into our passages and focus on the learning of the word together.

[STAY IN THE WORD] closed
It’s easy to feel lazy during this pandemic, while our daily routine is limited to certain activities, and all of a sudden, we have so much extra time being at home, trying to find entertainment to kill time.

If you need some motivation to study the Word, this group is definitely for you. In this group, you are going to be accountable with one another, to encourage one another, to continue to stay in the Word, to pray and fellowship.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)

Please expect to:
1) Take turns to lead once with another small group member
2) Pray for one another
3) Have fellowship and have FUN

[CLOSE KNIT GROUP OF COUPLES] closed
Hi!
For this 2020 summer small group term, we will join our fellow brothers and sisters as we read the Book of James together via the Francis Chan-led video series on RightNow Media. Because of its nature, this small group will lead to befriending other couples at NHM resulting in a close knit group of couples that both support and mentor each other.

Read, Meditate, Share
This small group will be oriented toward discussion and community. Since our time together will be geared towards discussion, please be ready to share what God has been speaking to you as we go through the book. In order to build community through fellowship, we will also be sharing about our lives. It is expected that we will share based on the reading during our discussions with the goal of trying to apply it to our lives as husbands, wives, engaged, or dating (aka not be a lecture-type or theology-debate Bible study).

Focus
This group is focused on how the Word of God has shaped our marriages and lives. Both you and your spouse or SO (significant other) are highly encouraged to sign up together, and should have no difficulty reading and communicating in English. This group is for those who are married, engaged, or dating who are thinking about marriage. We hope to have a group of married couples that can mentor those who are thinking or wanting to get married. If you are willing to be open and share honestly how God is working in your life this group might be a good fit for you.

Expectations of SG Time
Members will be expected to:
– Join the weekly SG meetings on Sundays
– Commit to attending them on time
– Be respectful to other people’s time by notifying your absence ahead of time (please try not to be absent).
– Read the weekly reading assigned (Discussion questions* will be provided before each meeting)
– Lead one session. This will be done with your SO. See it as a spiritual challenge! an opportunity for you both to grow closer together and to God! 2 in 1, no 3 in 1, wow! Hallelujah Amen! We are all potential lay leaders and EVERY couple will take turns leading at least once.
– Pray for your prayer partner(s) within the group and to check in (text, call, or meet up) with your prayer partner(s) at least once throughout the week to encourage each other.

Extra
– If we meet via video conferencing, it will start sharply at 2pm. If we meet in person, then feel free to have lunch on your own after service, but please come to the cafe and order your drink by 2pm. That way we can start at 2:15pm. The goal is to end around 4pm.
– Each person should sign up, but please let me know the name and contact info of your SO
– The first meeting will be Sunday May 24th
– There will be one (or more) FUN DAYs which might take place outside the scheduled SG meeting time. Please be willing to set aside time to join – it is meant to encourage fellowship~ ^^ Will most likely occur 6/7 or 6/14.
– Most communications outside of the designated SG meeting will be done via Kakao group chat.
*The questions serve as a guide to help facilitate discussion about how God spoke to you through the reading. It is encouraged to write a reflection on the reading in order to make conversation in SG time flow well. Note that if it seems that a member is sharing “too long”, please do not take offense if cut short – we want everyone to have a chance to share.

[NEW LIFE IN JESUS] limited spaces remaining
Hello ^^ This small group will be a WOMEN’S ONLY small group. Sorry brothers!

This term we will study the books of James and Esther in order to discover how to be accountable to one another and to live the best we can as daughters of the Most High, glorifying Christ through all circumstances.

Our church body, as a whole, will be reading the book of James together, and our small group, separately, will also be reading Esther alongside. Why James and Esther?

 Why study the book of James? Greg Gilbert (senior pastor at Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky) explained it well when he said – The “primary message…in this book is that a Christian’s faith in the gospel should work itself out in a life of obedience. As he says in James 1:22, believers in Jesus should not just hear the word and believe it, but they should also do what it says! James is an intensely practical book, filled with exhortations to Christians about the way they should live their lives now that they have been given new life in Jesus. It is filled with allusions to and quotations of the teachings of Jesus, and it includes more imperatives per word than any other New Testament book.”

 Why Esther? Esther is the story of a woman who had to face the near annihilation of her people and how she persevered and moved forward by trusting Him; what a pertinent example for us to study during our present situation.

As the world currently faces the pandemic of covid-19, what better way for Christians to shine the light of Christ then to make sure we are living out our faith accordingly (following the practical guidelines given in the Bible), with the strength and dignity given to us by our King (just like Esther), despite the panic around us? Let us not be shaken by the darkness we face, but push forward in humble obedience and dependence upon our one and only Savior.

***Please Be Aware –
1. Due to coronavirus we may not be allowed to meet physically until the government gives the ok, so we may have to meet online via Zoom chats. If you feel you cannot commit to meeting online please let the small group leader know.
2. The small group leader will conduct phone interviews before small group begins, if you do not have a Korean phone number you must provide a viable way for the leader to contact you or you may be dropped from the small group. For example, if you only provide an email address but do not reply to emails the leader sends, then you will be at risk of being dropped from the small group.
3. Members who join this small group are expected to commit to meeting once a week to study the Bible and pray together, if you need to miss any of the meetings please let the leader know at least 24 hours before.
4. Online meetings could make it difficult to focus, but let’s try our best not to get distracted and not to fall away! Please sign-up with the intention of wanting to grow in, learn and understand more about Christ, and to encourage our fellow sisters in that too.
